An Atlantis colony
One of the most beautiful island all over the world and the Atlantis Mith
Akrotiri is a Minoan Bronze Age settlement on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini (Thera). The settlement was destroyed in the Theran eruption about 1627 BC and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of fine Frescoes and many objects and artworks. The settlement has been suggested as a possible inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis. The site has been excavated since may 1967.
Connecting the old excavation site to the town of Akrotiri, there is a path descending from the first houses of the small city to the parking lot of the excavations of Akrotiri. The path has been both signaled and reopened (on September 2012) now regularly undergoing maintenance thanks to international volunteers responding to Citizens in Action call. The local population has been the first supporter of this initiative and in charge of the keeping of the path as been involved working along with the volunteers. The path is suitable for mountain biking, hiking, and many other activities. If a right deviation is taken along the walking of the path you might reach the Red Beach area.
Archaeological, seismological, and vulcanological evidence has been presented linking the Atlantis myth to Santorini. Speculation suggesting that Thera/Santorini was the inspiration for Plato's Atlantis began with the excavation of Akrotiri in the 1960s, and gained increased currency as reconstructions of the island's pre-eruption shape and landscape frescos located under the ash both strongly resembled Plato's description. The possibility has been more recently popularized by television documentaries such as The History Channel programme Lost Worlds (episode "Atlantis"), the Discovery Channel's Solving History with Olly Steeds, and the BBC's Atlantis, The Evidence, which suggests that Thera is Plato's Atlantis.
Staying in the astonishing frame of caratteristic Akrotiri town, in front of the amazing caldera of Santorini, this experience will guide us to know more about the misterius Minoan civilization. Through lessons and visits to the excavations and museums of the island, we will make a journey through 3500 years, letting us be seduced by the black beaches and the majestic volcanic caldera we will sail on a greek traditional boat cruise to enjoy the most famous sunset in the world.
